• Creation of internal courtyard to west, next to existing academic building, and using overhangs and the existing building for west shading, was a good site and orientation strategy, given the site.

• Good planning to bring natural light into common spaces and teaching/lab spaces, particularly lab clerestories. 

• Interior finishes and materials were clean and appropriate for an institutional facility.

• Exterior entry sequence well conceived and very simple.
• Major living spaces capitalize on views offered by the site.
• Generally crisp geometry in forms.
• Siting and plan takes advantage of site features and solar orientation of site quite well.

• Northern face of house displays arrangement of form that ties well to nature of the surrounding landscape.
• Main living space is very simple and well conceived.
• Interesting sectional space connections in main living and circulation spaces.

Clean and elegant interior detailing for a residential project.

Very simple and spatially legible floor plan.

Interior spaces composed of simple and minimal well-executed forms and elements.

• Clean exterior detailing and connections between disparate materials.
• Well executed connection between the interior spaces and exterior landscape in major living spaces.
• Contrast of exterior material, color and texture works well to differentiate major exterior elements (although the jury would like to know more on the choice of blue).
• Simple elegance in many of the outdoor spaces and arrangement of architectural elements that created them.

Second Street House

• Innovative use of infill site for living, parking, guest quarters and garden/courtyard.
• Sparing but careful use of materials created a simple and modest project that has dignity in its simplicity.
• House appears to make the most of the site it occupies and the modest materials it uses for an outcome that is significant in its design quality.
• As a general observation of the jury, the nature of the design and interiors of this house suggested it might be the residence of the architect who designed it.

The Veranda Compound

Contractor – Chris Vigil Construction

• Well conceived and arranged site plan with simple unit plans to create a central pedestrian commons apparently uninterrupted by vehicles.
• Nice arrangement of building, site and landscape forms for a contemporary interpretation of southwest forms and landscape using simple and cost-conscious materials.
• The jury felt in this submittal further illustration of surrounding context and sites would have further strengthened the submittal.

Lamy Building Improvements

• Project appeared to stretch a tight budget to make substantive site, material, deferred maintenance (that resulted in limited renovation) and aesthetic improvements to reflect a more historically accurate basis of this building.
• Building appears to be more true to its original intent and site/landscape feature improvements highlight the building’s relationship to the site and presence beyond the site.
